Birkenstock's history dates back to 1774 where Johann Adam Birkenstock is entered in the church archives in the city of Langen-Bergheim as a “shoemaker and subject”. With shoe making skills passed down through the generations, Johann’s great-great- grandson Konrad Birkenstock began the first production of Birkenstock in Frankfurt in 1896 by opening two speciality shoe shops.
Over time, the Birkenstock style has modernised and expanded with the addition of a comfortable footbed, deep heel cup for stability and interior and exterior arch support.
